Perry's Bagel Cafe wants everyone to be able to read our menu and place an order, whatever device or assistive technology you use.
This page is a plain account of what we build to, what we have actually tested, and what we know is not finished. If something on this site gets in your way, we want to hear about it and we will fix it.
The standard we build to
We aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. That is the benchmark most commonly referenced under the Americans with Disabilities Act for public-facing websites.
Level AA is a target, not a certificate. No site is permanently compliant, because every content change can introduce a new problem. We treat it as ongoing work.
What we have built in
- Keyboard access. Every link, button, menu item, and form field can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline on each one.
- Screen readers. Pages use real headings, landmarks, lists, and labelled form fields rather than styled divs, so the page can be navigated by structure.
- Contrast. Text and interface colors are checked against the 4.5:1 minimum for body text and 3:1 for large text and controls.
- Touch targets. Interactive controls are at least 24 by 24 pixels with adequate spacing, so they are usable without fine motor precision.
- Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, our scroll and hover animations are disabled. Content never depends on an animation running in order to appear.
- Zoom and reflow. The site reflows to a single column and stays usable at 200 percent zoom and on small screens, with no horizontal scrolling.
- Images. Photographs that are decorative are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise. Meaningful images carry text alternatives.
How we test
We run automated accessibility checks against every page before release and fix what they surface. Automated tools reliably catch only a portion of real problems, so we also check keyboard navigation and page structure by hand.
We have not commissioned an independent third-party audit or formal user testing with people who use assistive technology daily. That is the honest limit of what we can currently claim.
Known limitations
We would rather name these than pretend they are solved.
- The embedded map. Our location map is a Google Maps embed and we do not control its internal accessibility. Every page that shows it also gives the street address as plain text and a direct link to directions, so the map is never the only way to get the information.
- Food photography. Menu photographs are currently illustrative rather than photographs of each exact sandwich, so they are marked decorative. The item name, description, and price are always available as text.
- Third-party checkout. Part of payment happens on our payment provider’s pages, which we do not control. If you hit a barrier there, call us and we will take the order over the phone.
At the shop
For questions about getting into and around the store itself, including parking and entry, please call us at (201) 261-5775 before you come by and we will tell you exactly what to expect and help however we can.
We would rather you get an accurate answer from someone standing in the room than a general claim on a web page.
Tell us about a problem
If any part of this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, contact us and describe what happened. Telling us the page and the device or assistive technology you were using helps us reproduce it quickly.
- Phone: (201) 261-5775
- Email: hello@perrysbagelcafe.com
- In person: 501 NJ-17 South, Paramus, NJ 07652
We aim to respond within two business days. If a fix will take longer than that, we will tell you what we are doing and give you another way to get what you needed in the meantime, which usually means placing the order by phone.
